As much as I love everything there is about fall, the one downside is that it tends to be the start of cold & flu season. A nice pick-me-up for a friend or loved one who is sick is a nice basket or heavy gift bag filled with a container of homemade soup, some fresh bread or rolls, tea, a little sweet treat and a box of tissues. You can pick up the jars at almost any craft store or any store that sells canning supplies. I tend to gravitate toward a classic chicken noodle soup since you usually can’t go wrong, but the possibilities are endless.
This is also a great concept for new Mom’s, kids away at school, someone going through a tough time, etc. When my Mom was ill four years ago I was trying desperately to balance everything and cooking was simply not on the list of priorities. As a result nearly early every meal was on the go during this time. After a month of getting home from the hospital late at night friends kept asking what they could do to help me. I had no answers, just asked for thoughts & prayers. Then in week 5 or 6 I came home late one night to a gift bag outside my door filled with a batch of homemade soup and a loaf of fresh bread. It was a simple gesture and one that was so much appreciated. This simple gesture repeated itself in the weeks following and since I know how much it meant to me at the time I try to return the generosity to others when I can. Never underestimate the power of a simple gesture!
